Mine Town Story
Mine Town Story
West Virginia Born, I was.
we call hollers, no towns near.
Food is scarce, but work's scarcer
Not many choices left 'cept to
work the coal mines three shifts
or could be a farmer or a bum.
Money here is Paper Scrip
and only payable to the miner
to buy and pay at Company Store.
Not much choice, no choice.
Houses were identical row houses.
Owned by Coal Mine, built cheap
in return for your slavery with
all boys, men of age to work mines.
.
Life was the same all around.
every mine visited identical
Every Coal Company same
No where else to go, no cars.
They had one room schools
with all grades in one room.
Most times older ones taught littles.
Spaces cramped no heat 'cept coal.
As time went on the Mines were
more civilized and built churches,
movie theaters, playgrounds too.
But pay was low and still trapped.
West Virginia mountains beauty
but was raped and ravaged by
thieves and risk takers of mine
Poverty, does not reduce beauty.

Manipulation
Manipulation

Manipulation
I encourage you
To VICTIMIZE me
So that I can
Feel unworthy
The game I play
Involves setting
Up myself as
Well as you
To misuse me
And abuse me.
I can then say
“None of this
Is my fault!”
I’m a VICTIM
Of Circumstances.

Who is Free?
Who is Free?
Wolf wanders to and fro
searching food for pack.
Eagle flies above his prey
searching for moment right.
Man wanders like the wolf
looking for his next claim.
Who among the three is
fullest in outward strength?
Which one has the most
Inner fortitude to compete?
What honor is bestowed
to each wolf, eagle, man?
Are they each free in
their commonality?
I see not much difference.
The wolf freely searches earth.
The eagle freely soars searching.
Man the most predatory, freely stalks
seeking to destroy anything not
of use nor of any value to him.
What do you observe here?
Who is free if not man to destroy.

Honor and What It Means
I was thinking about the word honor and how we as individuals view it. Wikipedia states honour (American spelling honor) is an abstract concept entailing a perceived quality of worthiness and respectability that affects both the social standing and the self-evaluation of an individual or institution such as a family, school, regiment or nation.I felt honor even when my daughter was graduated with Honors, receiving her Masters Degree last year. I felt honor because I had instilled the characteristics that she needed throughout her lifetime to achieve honor.
Honor can be used as a noun, adjective, and verb so it has multiple uses but these all point to high regard or esteem that you recognize or bestow to someone. Honor has a close relationship with the word, integrity,an honorable word showing character. According to Wikipedia, "integrity is the qualification of being honest and having strong moral principles, or moral uprightness. It is generally a personal choice to hold oneself to consistent moral and ethical standards." It is my opinion that we as a society use the words honor and integrity, frivolously not bestowing the honor due these words. The poem was written yesterday to honor Earth Day. Susans Soul...

Facade
This is a poem written a few months ago for a contest on allpoetry.com, The picture was the prompt. BTW I didn't win. Anyway, here was my take on the prompt. Susans Soul...

Facade

Such a large structure demanding
Great recognition and respect from all.
Strong and sturdy housing a multitude
Of rooms and people, the respected family.
The house keeps please entries flowing
As it observes the massive acreage that
Provide the house an array of stylish trees,
hedges, fountains, and flowering gardens.
No storm can touch the strong outer facade.
Inside those many rooms and people
Secrets abound like festering wounds.
The odor of the lies told to maintain the
Status quo--"Don't rock the boat," now.
Consider yourself forewarned that denial
coats, but the inner walls threaten their
encroachment on the strong outer stones.
The facade inside delivers damning news,
As both facades start to crumble from denial.
Great recognition and respect from all.
Strong and sturdy housing a multitude
Of rooms and people, the respected family.
The house keeps please entries flowing
As it observes the massive acreage that
Provide the house an array of stylish trees,
hedges, fountains, and flowering gardens.
No storm can touch the strong outer facade.
Inside those many rooms and people
Secrets abound like festering wounds.
The odor of the lies told to maintain the
Status quo--"Don't rock the boat," now.
Consider yourself forewarned that denial
coats, but the inner walls threaten their
encroachment on the strong outer stones.
The facade inside delivers damning news,
As both facades start to crumble from denial.
